The government seem determined to atleast build the base infrastructure, unsure of how the app would perform, and solve for spam & fraudulent call use case. Again, I don’t see TrueCaller getting any favours here but local Indian apps. This can only happen if, only if, TRAI decides to license this API to private players.

It feels like TRAI wants more control and it has the power to create laws for telecom operators in India to give backdoor access to every type of user data, legally. It’s also working with telecom operators to solve for stringent KYC norms as well as back end integrations with it’s mobile app. TRAI “claims” that it will launch a mobile app, in 3 weeks, that will show KYC-based names on users' phone displays, whenever they receive a call. In numbers, India accounts for 220 million of Truecaller's 300 million worldwide user base. This has challenged the Truecaller monopoly of Caller ID for spam, fraud & more.
